Four-time World Champion piper Kyle Warren has recently returned to Scotland after spending five years in Australia, teaching bagpipes at the prestigious Scotch College in Melbourne and leading the Grade 2 Australian Champions, Hawthorn Pipe Band as pipe major.

Before emigrating, Kyle was a member of the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band, winning seventeen of twenty titles in four years (2011 to 2014) which included a history-making double “Grand Slam”. Kyle was also a full-time member of The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, touring worldwide and joining the famous “bag rock” band after graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Scottish Music (Piping) from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Highlights in Kyle’s piping career include releasing his debut album Wanted and a book of music, Tunez; recording pipes on the Disney Pixar Oscar-winning movie Brave; reaching the final of the BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician of The Year; Pipe Major of the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland; winning a Danny Kyle award with TNT at Celtic Connections; winning the Bagad Championship in Lorient with Bagad Cap Caval and teaching at the highly successful Dollar Academy, prior to emigrating to Australia.

Relentless was produced by Stevie Lawrence, who plays various instruments and composed and played guitar on a solo track A Leap in The Dark. A host of other musicians include Jack Smedley (of Rura, on fiddle), Adam Brown (guitar), Craig Muirhead (piano), James Lindsay (bass), Scott MacK (percussion), Leon Thorne (saxophone), David Riddell (trumpet), Scott Wood (keyboards) and Glen Bardwell (didgeridoo).

June 2022 News

Tony McManus & Julia Toaspern continue their extensive and very popular tour of the United Kingdom, having passed through Edinburgh on 1st June. They released their Live In Concert album on Greentrax in 2019. More information on the tour at Tony McManus’ tour dates page or from Stoneyport Associates.

Current adverts in the magazines Living Tradition, Rock ‘n’ Reel and Songlines feature Eric Bogle - The Source of Light (a current bestseller, released early in 2022); Eddie Seaman - Cave of Gold (a late 2021 release) and Kyle Warren - Relentless (a July 2022 release). The latter two are piping-based albums featuring other instrumentalists and singers, both upbeat and exciting collections led by very talented pipers.

The good news is that gig opportunities are at last appearing after the extensive Covid lockdown period and artist sales are slowly increasing, a huge relief to record labels who have so long suffered from the lack of these and retail outlet sales. Excellent mail order sales have carried us through that most difficult period.

Malinky - Handsel

Greentrax Managing Director Ian Green's Pick Of The Month - £11.00 throughout June for this 27-track double CD album. Ian writes:

“The first CD contains all new recordings while the second CD is a selection of Malinky’s favourite tracks from previous albums and live tracks. This is cracking value from one of Scotland’s best bands who, prior to lockdown, had toured all over the world, including extensive tours of Europe and visits to North America. The band members are Fiona Hunter, Steve Byrne, Mark Dunlop, Mike Vass (a recent award winner) and guest Euan Burton on double bass. A highly recommended double album of hugely talented musicians.”
