Waulking Songs From Barra

Distinctive waulking songs of the Western Isles, featuring Mary Morrison, Calum Johnston, Kate Buchanan and Flora Boyd.

Fulling or waulking of home-made cloth was carried out in Gaelic Scotland by pounding the material against a board or tramping it with the feet. This was usually women’s work and the waulking songs were sung by the groups of women to lighten the load of this tiring work. Only waulking by hand has survived to this day.

The Scottish Tradition Series consists of a selection of material previously held in the School of Scottish Studies Archives at the University of Edinburgh. The widely acclaimed collection is quite unique, and has been regarded as “the most important series of traditional recordings ever…”.
